Thanks for posting this article even if it is from 2010 I found that it had some interesting points that I was unaware of. I found her historical discussion of how bisexuals have struggled to be recognized by those in the gay community enlightening. She writes of an almost gay political repression of acknowledging and accepting the existence of bisexuality in the 50’s to 80’s. I think that we now struggle to have this attitude recognized as Bi erasure. I think that some on this site who promote and support GLBT organizations need to be reminded of this. I get the impression that some biguys who are sexually attracted to transwomen in transition cling to identifying as bisexual rather than pansexual. Then again pansexuality may be not promoted as a viable sexuality still today. It may be pushed under the bisexual identity for similar reasons as why bisexuality was not recognized or it just may be ignored by the group who say labels should not be used. Too many labels make it confusing?
I am inclined to think that much that she writes is more specific to her gender issues than her sexuality issues.
I don’t think that bisexuality reinforces the notion that there are two genders as much as it states a sexual/romantic attraction to the two cis genders (also trans people who have transitioned to physically appear as csigender may be in that group). I think once transpeople in transition are added into the option it has moved from bisexual to ominisexual/ pansexual. There may be more need to acknowledge that there is a difference between bisexuality and pansexuality. They are not interchangeable.
I did get a clear message that the author is attracted to male body and female body as she referred to them. I didn’t get a clear message that as a transwoman that she was attracted to other transpeople in transition though? Those that present themselves as one gender but not not cisgender may muddy the clarity of gender but do they muddy the water as far as pansexuality being different from bisexuality?
What I don’t read her stating/ acknowledging is that bisexuals who are attracted to gender binary with no attraction to transpeople in transition have a right to be acknowledged as different from those who are pansexual.
