Sweden Allows Public Masturbation

A 65-year-old Swedish man was acquitted of sexual assault after pleasuring himself on a beach in Stockholm in June.
The district court of Södertörn tossed out the charge on the grounds that he didn’t look at anybody while fondling himself. The court ruled he had committed no offense, as he did not direct his “activities” at any particular target.
Public prosecutor Olof Vrethammar told the Mitti newspaper that he had no plans to appeal and called the ruling “reasonable.” When asked if the act is now acceptable in public, Vrethammar said public fondling was “okay” – as long as it’s not directed towards a specific individual — but may still be considered “disorderly conduct.”

I'm not quite sure I would agree if someone masturbates in public within a few feet of a playground currently occupied by children, but yeah - if you're on the beach with other adults .. of course if someone asked him to stop I hope he would.

I think people in my country on the one hand are too uptight about sex. It's a natural part of being human. But on the other hand they display 12 year old girls on TV as if they are adults. It's almost schizophrenic the way emotions are portrayed by the media.

It's not the sex I object to, but the objectification of people.

I had folks take liberties with intimate boundaries around me when I was young and it really did mess with my mind. I don't wish that on any child; children need people with power and authority in their lives that they can trust to do the right thing.

The difference here is that the person isn't directly involving anyone else .. If I had children and they saw someone like this gentleman and asked me an honest question about it I probably would explain as best I could for their age - including that most people practice intimacy in private.

This is interesting how some switched to concerns about a masturbating man might harm children. The place where I found this article did not pick up this concern but one person referred to another place where the chat was similar to this web site. I think that a lot of our societies have moved from don't masturbate or you may go crazy to it is ok to masturbate in private. We have not moved to a position of where masturbation is ok and do it when ever the mood strikes. Children should see masturbation as acceptable part of life.

Yes, I know the article didn't mention children and I hesitated a lot before I pressed the POST REPLY button for many reasons.

I do think children should see masturbation as normal but there is a fine line between masturbating with only yourself in a public place and looking at someone else, even in the slightest, while doing it - and offending that someone else who didn't want to be the object of real or imagined fantasy.

I like sex, and most times in general wouldn't immediately be offended by someone masturbating but I can think of several social settings in public places where that sort of behavior might be offensive or inappropriate.. Passing a funeral procession for example..in my mind is a lot different than masturbating in a secluded area of a public park.

I'm just not sure it's a concept that the rest of the world is ready for yet; never mind that the term "sex addiction" has now entered the mainstream vocabulary.

Sex is a healthy part of being human, but so is being loving, caring and respectful of yourself and others.

I do resent that there are no healthy public places for people who are attracted to the same sex to express their sexuality. In some places if two men or two women even hold hands together they are harassed - it bothers me immensely. Especially around Valentine's Day and Christmas. Of course, some of the big cities aren't quite that backward I suppose.

..and yes, if you view sex as a natural form of "stress relief" - I suppose we could all use more of that these days., I still don't know that the world is ready for 2/3 of the beach to start orgasming at the same time with no regard for others. Hmm, a different type of "flash mob" I suppose. It might be fun to try it and see, until we all end up in jail.

I have to imagine that there are "private" beaches that allow this sort of behavior without offending anyone at all.

I don't know how "healthy" they are, but there are places where men can meet and express their sexuality with other men in an accepting environment. Even here in the backwoods we have a couple adult stores with video booths. It is perfectly legal for men to meet and engage in sex there. There is also a gay bed and breakfast here that opens it's doors to bisexuals. Every Friday, from late morning to mid afternoon they host "Bi-Married Friday". Men can come and meet other like minded people and if they want, engage in sex, either in private or in front of everyone. Then there is the internet. We all know how helpful that is in exploring our sexuality, and sometimes warping it.

Human sexuality is more recognized around the world than just 20 years ago. But, for the overall health of a society, history has taught us that sex does require some discretion. Public masturbation is probably more common than it used to be, but that is probably just run over from an otherwise healthier attitude about sex.

Sex is intimate. Seeing intimacy is uncomfortable for the vast majority of us. We can tell ourselves that a guy jerking off under a tree, away from people, into himself and no one else is ok. But we aren't wired that way. We can't change the basic feeling of being uncomfortable in the presence of some dude flogging himself.

Maybe that's a specific American feeling but I think it's more a human thing.

People were doing it anyway all over the world, just barely covered with towels as they ogled suntanned bodies in bikinis.... No law would stop it so why try to create one?

In general, criminal laws must be interpreted narrowly and in favor of the defendant. So if the law in Sweden defines the offense as exposing yourself to another person, if the defendant didn't do it to another person but was just doing it on the beach where he thought no one was there to see him, the charges must be dismissed.

people in UK get arrested for having sex in public even if they're trying to do it secretly.
in those cases, they're only doing the act to each other but it still comes under gross indecency if its in public.

In Canada and probably Sweden, it is not gross indecency until it gets to be -30oC...then you do not need to lop it off..it just falls off when exposed..;)
