I think somethings wrong with the car?

At frist I didn't really notice it so I don't know how long its been. (since I sometimes drive without my implant turned on so Im totally deaf) but I noticed it for real on July 3rd but since we were going away for a week long trip I didn't bother to do anything.

My blinkers turns off BY THEMSELFS... I mean I have it clicked on, but I can't turn yet. Suddenly they just click off... but the stick to turn the singal on is still in its "on" postion so I undo it and redo it ... it clicks on... stays that way for a min or so then shuts itself off again. (again I haven't even turned yet!!)

AND the engine's giving me trouble to... I would turn car on, "check engine" singal comes on.... but I turn it off then on again and this time no check engine singal comes on.
But other times when I turn the car on, this singal never appers at first.

Whats wrong with my car or should I get it checked??
I know nothing about cars... I leave it for the guys to figure it out (my dad and oldest brother) but they are both busy so I hadnt had time to voice my concern.
Should I worry or is my car just being weird?

Not a car person here, but I did ask my husband.

He says take the car into a qualified technician - the problems could be related or totally separate and that it's worth the price of the check to forgo change this and see if that works, then.... , then....

Not sure how much your pop and brother know about cars, they may be able to help you figure out what's wrong too.

when your blinker is working does it make the "Clicking" sound? then stops when the signal turns off? That might be the blinker relay. when they go bad they "stick" off or on. The stick stays because it's triggered by the movement of the steering wheel. The Relay is like $5.00 and goes in your fuse box.

The check engine light could be a number of things. On some of the newer cars if your Gas cap isn't tight and the vacuum system detects pressure loss, the check engine light will come on. A bad Oxygen sensor can cause that too. In fact every sensor on the car can set off that light. A good thing is, since the "check engine" light came on, there should be a code in the computer hopefully telling a mechanic what the issue is. I would not go to the manufacture's dealership. They tend to chase issues instead of fixing them. you may end up buying more parts than you need. I would go to a mechanic who is respected by many of your friends and family.

I hope that helps!!!

Blinkers aside, Tasha why do you drive without your hearing implants in? That is very dangerous not only to you but those around you.

questions

1.) What kind of Car? Make/Model?year
2.) Blinker with a Mind of its own usually is a relay
3.) intermittent Check engine light ? How is your Gas Mileage? are you filling up more than you should?

Tasha--there are all kinds of things that can set off the "check engine" light--from something as simple as not having your gas cap screwed down tight enough--I think this accounts for about 90 percent of the times the light goes on--to things like filters are dirty or you have a major failure in some major engine component--but if you had that--there might be other signs of that---

You do need to take it into a car dealer or some auto stores can do it to plug in a code reader---that is the only way to know for sure what is up with it

If the check engine light only comes on at start up and then goes out shortly thereafter--that is normal for its just going through its diagnostic check----if the car is older---this might take longer for a lot of reasons---but if the light does go out after 45 seconds to a minute---and doesn't come back on--no problem----

If Arana hadn't said something, I would have...and will. Of course you can drive, but imagine this scenario. You have your implant turned off and you're driving to work. You're in a hurry because you left late and the bozo in front of you is going 10mph below the speed limit. You go to change lanes, seeing no one close next to you so you start switching lanes. The person in your blind spot lays on the horn. But you can't hear it because your implant isn't turned on. You crash. Why? Because you didn't have your implant turned on.

Please drive with your implant turned on. It's safer for you and everyone else around you.

Ya, the singal is making a clicking sound (and I can see the green arrow too) but then it auto shuts itself off even tho I HAVEN'T turned yet so I have to move the stick to turn it off then back up to right/left signal so it clicks again. (sound and arrow flashing)

The car is a VW Beetle made in 2000 or 2001.

The check engine light doesn't come on every time I turn on the car. When it does, I would turn the car off and restart and the light doesn't come back on.

Im gonna get my dad to check it on Friday when I visit my parents :)

Thanks all :)

Ya. I drive better than my now ex friend Heather tho... she has NO hearing aids... and she drives AS SHE TEXTS ON HER BLACKBERRY!!!
I have a blackberry too but its in my purse and whoevers messaging can wait till Im at home, parking lot or insde a building (mall..etc)

Nope. I leave very early with lots of time... so Im usually in my car just at my job's parking lot for a good 15 mins till work. lol
And I have eyes so I check my blind spots all the time when driving and I want to switch lanes. Unlike a lot of people who forget this important thing.... I know how to use my blind spot. :) lol

Sometimes its not possible to have my implant on... the battery dies sometimes AS Im driving so I can't change it till I reach home or whatever location Im going to.

I'm not talking about what other people do. What your friend does is what *she* does. I worry about YOU, dear.

Sure, I understand that batteries die. I have my own hearing aids and the batteries have worn out at inopportune moments once or twice. The thing is, we're talking about you and your safety. Here in the States it would be illegal for you to drive without your implant turned on. Here you would be fined a butt load of cash because such an act is considered to be endangerment, the same as driving without glasses or contacts.

Accidents happen without any sort of warning. That's why they call them that. I just want you to be careful so you don't get hurt and we don't get a message on the board saying you're in the hospital.

Check coolant level for engine light. replace flasher, its about an inch high and the circumferanc of a quarter in fuse panel cost 2 bucks at napa.

you're In Luck I'm a race VW's in my Spare time

2000 -2001 came with the AEG motor 2.0L Gas

there are two Major reasons why your New Beetle has a CEL (Check Engine Light)
One is the O2 Sensor
the Other could be the Timing Belt
Deffenitly get it scanned and you don't necessarily have to go to a Mechanic to get it scanned

check out http://www.thedov.com/ its a Volkswagen forum ask if anyone has a VAGcom and is willing to scan your car they will be more than willing to help you out

TashaNow you're making excuses Tasha. And you just mentioned all the other bad drivers that don't drive as safe as you do..are you going to hear them blare their horn at you, as herbie said, when you're in their way? And yes sweetie, there is always a blindspot at some point. You can't see everything going on no matter how good your eyes are. I have seen people cause near misses so many times and just drive on oblivious to what damage they have or might have caused, because like you, they think they are great drivers and if they don't see it it didn't happen. Please be safe, Tasha. We only care about your well being or we wouldn't say anything at all.

voltman's assesment of the check engine light is right, they often turn on when you start the car, if the car has been off a while, it's just the diagnostics and it's really only a problem if it stays on for more than 10-15 seconds, if you're worried though I'd still take it in just to be sure.

As for the blinker that could just be a light about to die. The electrical systems of cars are a little sensitive when it comes to turn signals. When either light dies, front or back, the entire system gets a problem. Is it just one set of signals or both sets, in other words does the problem only occur if you're turning in one direction or does it happen to both. If it's just the one direction I'd say you've got a light about to die. Even if it is both directions it might just be one light on each side about to die.

I never said Im a great driver. I personally hate driving..... a lot of deaf people drive with or without thier hearing aids or implant on.... in the case when the battery dies DURNING driving. Theres nothing you can do till you get to wherever your going.
Sure I had people honk at me and personally I think its funny thier honking is "going to deaf ears" I drive at the speed limit maybe a little over but not that much.
If there was an accident I stop. and have before when someone didn't notice I had stopped for a red light and didn't stop on time so I got bumped from behind (he was on and distracted by his cellphone). You can get fined for driving off. :)

Im careful.... accidents do and will happen. All I can do is just do what I know is right when it comes to driving.

Beside this isn't what the thread is about anyway.

Thankies . I'll have to check the lights. I hadn't thought of the light dying. They havent been touched since I got the car in 2000 or 2001 so ya, makes sense if its starting to die now.

I'm really sorry you don't get Herbie and my concern for you but I'll let you go ahead and live in your fairy tale world where you can turn off whatever you don't want to hear. Sorry we bothered you.
BTW: you said you laugh when people honk at you....did you ever think maybe someone honked because you turned without signaling and they nearly ran into you? I do believe that part was what this thread is about....but sorry again. I know you don't want to read about that stuff.

We bitch because we care. And I personally disagree with arana, there are no accidents, just occasions where someone chose their actions poorly and did something terrifyingly permanent.
I don't know your situation with money (or your aid / implant), but is it possible to get another one for when you are driving and the battery goes?

No, I laugh when people honk thier horn cause Im driving the speed limit and Im not gonna speed up just cause they are in a hurry somewhere.
OR Im waiting for the car in front of me to go (after red light turns green) and the car behind me honks. Im like "ah, you can just wait... theres nothing I can do till this one goes"

And my signals has nothing to do with my deafness. I ALWAYS turn them on when I turn. And I know when its on. recently when they turn themselfs off, I just re-turn it on.

and I don't have a fairy-tale world. They don't exist.

Im well aware of the careless drivers and Im using my eyes at all times implant on or not.
There are people who use thier cell phones when driving, applying makeup or even having sex when driving..... I think those are far worse than a deaf person just driving without thier implant/aid on.
I have known a lot of deaf people who don't wear aids/implant and they are very very good drivers.

No, you just change the batteries when the battery dies. No need to buy a new implant unless it got damaged (or to old).
When Im working they die too. Can be right in the middle of a customer talking then get pissed cause I can't hear them... its not always easy to singal another coworker that I need a 5 min break to change the battery.
So when the battery dies, I just leave it alone till I get the moment to change them.

Also if its raining outside, I do need to take it off since its not waterproof so even if Im not driving, I could cross the street without it on due to the rain and theres careless drivers too.
